The UCS weighs in on CAFOs.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, "the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world" (according to their website blurb), published this report on Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) (via Common Dreams), which are a staple of the meat industry - with horriffic consequences to the local and global environment (anybody remember Al Franken's awesome riff on shit lagoons? brilliant!), not to mention shockingly inhumane treatment for the animals (debeaking, antibiotics and hormones, not to mention the never-seeing-sunshine-ever part).

CAFOs are bad. Learn more here. And, if you must eat meat, look for free range, grass fed animals raised by small scale farmers.
